036 Say Labas: Lithuanian Basketball

Lithuanian Basketball

Yes please! We are back it’s been around 2 weeks since our last podcast, we are hoping to get back to a more regular scheduled release pattern now that Kaunas is our home! We aim for new podcast episodes every Tuesday and a new blog post every Friday so look out for that.

It’s still quite cold here in Kaunas but we are starting to get used to it now, or maybe it’s just getting warmer, one can hope right. A lots gone on since the last episode and we hope to cover most of it in this episode. The theme for episode number 36 is Lithuanian basketball, all you Lithuanian enthusiasts will know that Basketball is a second religion here in Lithuania and it was high time we dedicated an episode to it.

Along with Basketball history, stories and vocab (which can be found on memrise) we talk about Lithuania’s recent Independence Day celebration that took place on the 16th of February. We both attended the celebrations here in Kaunas and were blown away by the amount of people who turned out and how many Lithuanian flags decorated the streets. It was wonderful. We also have THE most random news you will ever hear on this week’s episode. Listen to Solveiga’s news segment to find out why.

Last but certainly not least our town of the week which can be found in the East of Lithuania (Finally) a little place called Medininkai, home to an amazing castle and some a fascinating history that is both new and old. Tim’s fun fact this week was brought to us by one of our listeners, Mark as we hear about four statues that have been causing a fuss in Vilnius.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN MORE ABOUT…

  • What nonsense Tim and Solveiga have go up to.
  • The recent Independence Day celebrations here in Kaunas.
  • A crocodile making the News here in Kaunas, YES a crocodile.
  • A snip bit of the Lithuanian national anthem.
  • Learn a little bit about a small town called Medininkai.
  • All Lithuania’s most decorated basketball team Žalgiris. – Players, History and more
  • Four Soviet statues on Žaliasis tiltas in Vilnius.
